I haven’t watched a full Texas Longhorns game since Michigan. Don’t feel good about it. Work commitments and my best bud getting hitched in the South of France laid waste to my plans of catching up with Texas football. It be how it be.
The flip side, however, is the two games I “missed” were night games — not good for my timezone — and we’re #1 now, so who gives a shit?!
Now, if I were home, I’d make an exception for a night game now and then: Bowls for example. Ranked Games. Georgia. You know how it is.
It looks like I didn’t miss much in the last two weeks, though. And by much, I mean any drama. I certainly missed a lot of damn points. Two absolutely smoking performances against UTSA and ULM. And what I’m about to write is based solely on what I’ve seen on social and limited blog posts I’ve read in the last two weeks.
We have two QB1’s on our roster. The highlight reel I’ve seen from Arch Manning is pretty damn impressive. But, the hype around the kid is so damn much I hope it doesn’t go to his head. I hope he doesn’t get ahead of himself. Though, I’d understand, It’d be darn easy to do. I’m confident he won’t for a plethora of reasons; his heritage, he wanted to play for Sark, and the fact he should know he’s QB2.
Enter Quinn Ewers. What I’ve been impressed by is Quinn’s leadership since his injury. Try this on for size:
Say what you will, this boy is ready to battle. Doesn’t matter that he’s on the sidelines. He knows it GO time. He is THE leader in this team. I love that.
It would be easy to forget what Quinn is to this team with the Arch Manning fireworks on the field. As a football fan I feel it’s easy for the casual — hell, even sometimes well educated — fans to forget what their starting players bring to the table. This kind of leadership is so easy to overlook. And don’t forget, Quinn has mastered this offence.
As good as Arch looks, you can see his weak points. You can identify plays where he can’t get the ball off where you know Quinn would. Arch is a talent, no doubt about it, but the rest of the team, I’d argue, play for him because of who he is, not what he is. When it comes to Quinn, they play for who he is. The man he is on the field. The man he is, in this case, off the field.
Our defence is also seriously impressive. While we haven’t played anything close to a ranked team, the lack of points against us is encouraging. We’ve seen some great shutdowns, sacks, and snipes. I love an INT tuddy.
The receiving corps is looking fantastic. Supported by Jaydon Blue who had a monster performance last week against ULM. There’s a lot to be excited about in this Texas team.
For one, I’m looking forward to watching some football tomorrow. Mississippi (oh my god you wouldn’t believe how many times I had to type that just now to get it right) State should be a walk in the park. Let’s get back to it. Lets crush some skulls. Let’s bring the heat before facing off with Oklahoma in a couple of weeks. LFG.
Hook ’em.
